Program Note
A new film by Mabel Cheung, who previously released An Autumn′s Tale and City of Glass. Michael, a problematic child, temporarily moves to China to study, at his father′s insistence. Instead of studying, Michael joins a rock band and tours China. The director, who previously released films about love, depicts the lives and love lives of young Chinese. Beijing Rocks is structured in an interview style so that the band members themselves speak about their lives. This Film is centered on bandleader, Road′s passion for music, on disappointment and the devotional love of Yang Ying, Road′s girlfriend. The director warmly portrays the band members who are no different to any other young people around the world. They suffer various difficulties in their pursuit of music and, in fact, are more dedicated to music and life than other rock band members around the world. By traveling with the band, Michael unravels his twisted past and accepts himself, his music and his father. This film provides yet another opportunity to experience Chinese rock music. With the rock band as the focal point, the use of sound effects adds to the success of the film. The song called "International", dubbed in Chinese rock music style, is the highlight of the film.
