Program Note
Ah Na is a young Chinese immigrant girl living in New York. She works illegally at a Chinese restaurant with the hopes of someday realizing an "American dream." In her unexpected visit to "Golden Palace" around Grand Central Station, she meets an older Caucasian man and becomes excited and hopeful but, it turns out, he is not her savior. Ah Na faces more difficulties as her reason for leaving China is disclosed after her mother′s visit. This is the debut film of Meng Ong, an NYU graduate, and was introduced at Sundance. Although the subject matter is familiar, Meng Ong has transformed Ah Na′s trials by depicting them through long, breath-taking scenes and creating an overwhelming sense of tragedy, transforming An Na′s story into a kind religious suffering. Ah
Na is bombarded with one problem after another-dating a person with AIDS; betrayal by a friend; beaten and banished from her home town; experiencing trouble in a foreign land; betrayed by her man; and fired from the restaurant-yet refuses to yield to these problems. The final scene of Ah Na walking the streets of New York alone recalls the final image of Kenji Mizoguchi′s Osaka Elegy. (Hur Moon-Young)
