Program Note
This film is an examination of the situations in life overlooked by pointing the camera at the daily lives of foreigners and those alienated from society.
Khan and Jacky are illegal aliens from Bangladesh. Their lives are far from satisfactory, but their struggles to fit in are sacrificed by the need to support their families. Koreans share their problems as well. Han-Shik, a college drop out and Yong-Seung, who grew up as an orphan, drown their self-pity in liquor. They abuse their foreign co-workers but in reality there is no difference betwwen the violators and the violated as they are all oppressed. They gradually lose their dreams within the suffocating walls of the laundry factory. Khan takes the injured Buto back home and Jacky slowly drinks himself into oblivion. Meanwhile Yong-Seung is betrayed by his girlfriend, and Han-Shik‘s father‘s expectations for Han-Shik to study abroad drives him into misery. A "barricade"may be an artificial obstacle of our own creation but to take it down is almost impossible. The film proposes a grim reconciliation, but whether this is really a solution is questionable. (Lee Sang-Yong)
