Program Note
The Letter is a remake of director Lee Jung-gook′s film from 1997. Dew leads a solitary life after the death of her grandmother and roommate. She ends up marrying Ton after an incident where Ton picks up her purse, but Ton also soon falls ill and dies, leaving Dew alone again. A posthumous video-letter from Ton arrives, giving Dew the strength and will to go on: she begins to feel eternal love. This film is a work from producer Duangkamol Limcharoen, well known as a leader within the Thai New Wave cinema, which he worked on right before he died last year. The original Korean version was a box office success. The Thai version was also well received by audiences after its opening in September 2004. The film is revised through different times and languages following a similar plot and aesthetic which allows us to compare what was taken directly and what was changed. Although eternal love may be a false hope for most people who will never know when their last day will be, Duangkamol has proved that it is a shared sentiment for both Koreans and Thais. Taking care of loved ones until the moment of death is understood by both peoples, and is confirmed by the strong box office of both versions. (Mina Oak)
