Program Note
American poet Sylvia Plath is best known for three things: Ariel, The Bell Jar and her death by suicide at 30. She died in 1963, and Sylvia is a chronicle of her marriage to fellow poet Ted
Hughes and the last intense months of her life. Sylvia begins with Plath and Hughes meeting at Cambridge. At the outset, she is a vibrant contrasting figure in the dour English environment. They meet at a party and begin a glamorous courtship, followed by marriage. Their life and work begins to drain both of them, especially Plath, and jealousy soon forces its way into their lives. Their marriage deteriorates into one marked by
bitterness, adultery and violence - and all the while Plath′s mental state gets worse and worse. Finally, overwhelmed by despair and unhappiness, Plath takes her own life, leaving behind two
children and a devastated Hughes. Sylvia is not just a biopic of a renowned writer; it is also a vivid portrait of a talented, brilliant, unhappy, unstable woman′s psychological deterioration.
