Program Note
After a ten-year absence, Lazar is returning to his Serbian home. He is a different man now, newly liberated after a decade in prison. Like him, the country itself seems to want a better future. Jasna is a single mother with an autistic twelve-year old daughter. Unable to handle his daughter′s autism, her husband abandoned them. They are from Bosnia, refugees, and Jasna also craves a fresh start for her life and to forget her troubled past. They have been squatting in Lazar′s vacant apartment for quite a while, and seeing their situation for what it is, Lazar allows them to stay with him. Together, the outcasts slowly form a bond - a kinship - based on their mutual marginalization and hope for a brighter tomorrow. One of the hallmarks of director Goran Paskaljevic′s films is his unshakable faith that most people maintain a capacity for generosity and compassion regardless of life′s brutality. Midwinter Night′s Dream derives its impact from the simplicity of the characters′ core emotions, as well as the subtle criticisms of a society that would marginalize these people.
