Program Note
Director Clara Law immigrated to Australia in 1995. Often in her career since then, she has reflected on and asked questions about this new country, also her new home. In October 2002, Law read a newspaper article about a doctor and an asylum seeker. At the time, Australia was heading in a politically dangerous and negative direction. Originally intending the film to be a dramatic narrative, Law chose not to trivialize an important subject through drama. She and her husband financed the DV essay, relied heavily on word of mouth and professional donations, and set out to discover another face of Australia. The film follows the doctor, her husband, their four children and a 16-year old Afghan refugee for 12,000 kilometers across the continent. Interspersed with interviews - including family, friends, activists and ex-ministers - the film gathered considerable grass-roots support during the filming process, en route to making an urgent and immediate statement about our world right now.
