Program Note

A tragic love story of Rabia Balkhie who was a royal princess and a legendary poet. Rabia falls in love with an escorting warrior who was a slave. Not only their love story but also the process of filmmaking is touching. Attracted by this legendary story, Mohammad Nazir devoted his life to the completion of the film. However, despite its high production cost, the film failed to attract the audience and Nazir died soon after. This film depicting the couple who became the victim of the royal family’s conflict over winning royal authority is regarded as the most beautiful and dramatic one among all Afghan films. The splendid costume, film set and beautiful camerawork fully express Afghanistan’s greatest legend combining spectacular battles and delicate emotions. (CHO Young-jung)

Abdullah SHADAN

Born in 1945 in Afghanistan. For many years he was working with National Radio and producing radio dramas and literature shows. He was one the funders of National TV in Afghanistan. <Rabia Balkhie> was his first feature film where he played main character. In 1980 he became a head of Union of Afghan Journalists and was writing book on Afghan history. Now living in London, he works with radio programs for BBC Persian.

Mohammad NAZIR

Born in Herat Province, Afghanistan in 1947. His career started with <Mother′s Advice> in 1970. He was one of the promising actors who extremely struggle to create an independent cinema in Afghanistan. With establishing Nazir Film Production, he poured his life to make historical epic, <Rabia Balkhie>. After the unfortunate box-office failure of the film, he got weakened by illness passed away after two years.
