Program Note
The philosophical implications of this film are as universal as they are obvious ? accidental events can radically influence your life. But it is Kieslowski’s honest approach to his central character that makes the film extraordinary. The protagonist (played by Boguslaw Linda, an iconic actor in the 1980’s and 1990’s Poland) is thrown into three completely different paths of life, but regardless of the circumstances remains largely the same honest and well-meaning person. Kieslowski avoids moral relativism and instead of suggesting that our behaviour, good or evil, is the result of circumstances, states that a man’s character is the primary driver of his behaviour. (Michał CHACI?SKI)
Director
Director
Krzysztof KIEŚLOWSKI
Director and screenwriter who gradually moved from documentaries to fictional feature films. His early work is ascetic, documentary in style and approach, where a typical subject is the everyday life of ordinary people in communist Poland. His fictional features, including <Blind Chance> (1981), <the Decalogue series> (1988) and the <Three Colours trilogy> (1993-1994) are increasingly more stylised with metaphysical overtones.
