Program Note
The most fascinating element of this film ? Skolimowski’s feature debut ? is the deliberate blurring of the line between the filmmaker and the protagonist. Skolimowski is the director and the screenwriter but also the actor on the screen. During his student years he used scraps of film whenever he could find some and shot dozens of separate scenes, often improvising and without a plan to put it together into a feature. When he did turn it into a single (though not completely coherent) narrative, the result was a film which catches the spirit of the times, jagged in form but perfectly conveying the sense of disconnection and displacement of a young intelligent man in communist Poland of the 1960’s. Director
Director
Jerzy SKOLIMOWSKI
Director, screenwriter, actor; his distinctive visual style and stylistic concepts earned him the title of the most interesting (some say the only) Polish representative of the New Wave. Such films as <Start> (1967), <The Shout> (1978) or <The Lightship> (1985) were awarded in Cannes, Venice and Berlin. In 2008 he returned to filmmaking after 17-year hiatus. His most recent film, <Essential Killing> (2010), was awarded in Venice.
