Program Note
At first glance, this film is reminiscent of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) by John Cassavetes: a woman, who is mentally unstable, suddenly finds herself far away from her husband and children. As the story progresses, however, it looks more like The Brown Bunny (2003) by Vincent Gallo: a woman on the road begins a journey back to a certain past. What had seemed like a simple story becomes confusing with a non-linear structure. Things start to clear up around the half-hour mark, but it is still not easy to follow the characters who are emotionally connected by sudden flashbacks that are inserted between interwoven spaces and time. However, the director doesn′t intend to hide certain things for a plot twist. What he wants instead is to delay the emotions that the audience would feel at the end of the movie—rather than simply following the story and dialogue, he wants the audience to be absorbed into the emotions that are revealed by the characters′ facial expressions and gestures.
