Program Note

Following the success of her award-winning animated films, Crulic: The Path to Beyond (2011), The Magic Mountain (2015) and Marona′s Fantastic Tale (2019), Anca Damian returns with a post-modern re-interpretation of the Robinson Crusoe story. The Island imaginatively blends vibrant colors and a surreal story set in the present reality to tell the tale of a doctor living on a remote island invaded by migrants, NGOs and guards. This unique but intentional set up sets up what is a bitterly ironic look into a world in which racial discrimination, refugee issues, and ecological collapse are dissected through poetic lyrics and symbolic visuals. More than anything, this is a story about an individual, limited by his hypocrisy, living in solitude on this devastating planet, searching for the meaning of life. (Karen PARK)

Director

Anca DAMIAN

Anca Damian studied at the Academy of Theatre and Film Arts where she obtained a diploma in Cinematography and a Doctor′s degree in Arts, Cinema and Media. After graduating, she worked as a director, screenwriter and producer for several documentaries on art related topics, and also as a director of photography for two feature films, and many other documentaries and shorts. Her extensive filmography includes Crossing Dates (2008), Crulic – The Path to Beyond (2012), A Very Unsettled Summer (2013), The Magic Mountain (2015), Moon Hotel Kabul (2018), and Marona′s Fantastic Tale (2019). Her films were distributed worldwide and she has been awarded with numerous international prizes, including Cristal for Best Feature Film Award at Annecy, Best Director Award at Warsaw, Mirada International Award at Madrid, and Audentia Award by Eurimages.
