Program Note
2011 AND Busan Bank Fund Between 1960 and 1975, Cambodia’s film industry showed enormous growth by producing 400 films. However, when the Khmer government took over, most of the filmmakers were purged from the country and the films were burned. Only about 30 films survived the ordeal.Through the efforts of a few filmmakers who survived, [Golden Slumbers] awakens the oncemagnificent Cambodian film history from its deep sleep. The film also follows the Cambodia’s young filmmakers re-enacting the golden moment of Cambodian cinema. This process goes beyond mere restoration of film history. It stokes the once-buried public desire that pierced through Cambodian culture during that time. The memory of a beautiful past that exists behind the blood-drenched history brings forth sorrowful and dreamlike romance. For director Davy Chou, the grandson of a producer active during that vital period, this hidden past does not signify death. Instead, he hopes it was merely a?golden slumber’that promises waking up for a new golden age in Cambodian cinema. (CHO Young-jung)
