Program Note
Jimi Kim was praised as a Star-Turned-a-True-Actress in 1970’s. However, her acting reached its peak in mid 1980’s with [Kilsodeum] and [Ticket]. Jimi Kim plays Hwa-young who reunites with her long-lost beau and a son separated during the Korean war. However, already remarried and in a middle-class family of her own, she abandons them for she cannot disregard the gap both in time and class.
[Kilsodeum] boasts a radical viewpoint in that it depicts a mother’s choice based on a harsh reality with unforgiving authenticity. By excluding excessive sentimentalism, the film avoids being one-dimensional in its illustration of nationalistic issue of separated families of the Korean War. (JOO You-shin)
