Program Note
Based on Kim Dong-ree’s novel, this film exhibits a memorable, vibrant and passionate comeback performance from Jimi Kim following a long absence from the screen. Upon realizing that her son, Young-sul, has become a Christian, Eul-haw, a Shaman, burns the Bible and performs a Shamanistic ritual. In this process, she ends up stabbing her own son, ultimately killing him. This film looks at the conflict between a mother’s traditional shamanism and her son’s foreign Christianity, and the tragedy brought upon them. With majestic intensity, Jimi Kim portrays an authoritative mother who violently resists the change of the world and winds up driving herself to insanity. (JOO You-shin)
