Program Note
This is a masterpiece deserving the title of this generation’s best satire.
To a small town farmer, Kalyan, his goat Laila is more precious than his family, including a good-for-nothing son, Madan, and daughter, Meena, facing marital hardship for her lack of a dowry. Still, his most pressing concern is finding a mate for Laila. When he finally heads to town with his goat in tow, a big shot politician is visiting and the roads are all blocked. Kalyan ends up in jail, and fails to find a mate for his now-in-heat goat. Depressed, he slowly turns into a recluse.
As in his previous film, director Murali Nair throws cutting criticism and ridicule at authority and an oppressive patriarchal society while maintaining his characteristic sense of humor and surrealistic style. Kalyan’s obsession with Laila is a satire of man’s greed and selfishness. (KIM Ji-seok)
