Program Note
In this gentle romance, Istanbul takes front and center, almost as if it were a character of its own. A young muezzin assigned to a local mosque, Musa, falls in love with his demure Catholic neighbor Clara. Both are seeking new starts to their lives?he by relocating to Istanbul, she by devoting herself to the Church. Also along for the ride is Yakup, a bibliophile that attends Clara’s church. The three lives intersect in surprising?and improbable?ways, with the simmering attraction between Musa and Clara at the core. The easy pace and restrained sensuality of the film draw viewers in and Coskun’s muted high-definition DV is suitably evocative of the city and the emotions swirling within it. [Wrong Rosary] is as strong as its characters, and though the narrative can wander into melodrama, Musa and Clara are never less than a compelling couple. Themes of religious, social and cultural rifts are subtly woven into the story, but the film’s delicate humor precludes earnest preaching.
