Program Note
A new film from Elia Suleiman dealing with the lives of Palestinians who lived in Israel, and experiences from his own life. This film consists of four parts: from 1948 when Israel invaded Nazareth, his father’s death, intifada, and to the present. As the story begins at the director’s childhood, it gives a great deal of weight on the story of his father who resisted against Israel.
It is the third feature film from Elia Suleiman after seven years since [Chronicle of Love and Pain] 2002). Before this film, he has firmly introduced Palestinian films to the world with just two feature films. This film is an outstanding political work. We can see the real weight of history and time on his face and his solemn countenance, even in a humorous mood, and it will make the audience feel indescribably sad. The fixed camera has an effect on stressing silence, and the bustling movements of the characters which make the film a sort of slapstick, but the story of the director’s life is too sincere and tragic to simply laugh at the scenes. This film consists not of a large scale struggle but of the trivial matters of life, which makes this work more poignant.
