Program Note
A young woman willing to go to any lengths for status and wealth gets more than she bargained for while working as a prostitute. Coming across as an average English student, Aleksandra moves from her dead-end industrial hometown to attend university in Ljubljana. To pay for her swank apartment, she starts turning tricks, which her family doesn’t know about. Work is plentiful, as Slovenia is in the midst of presidency of the European Union, and diplomats, businessmen and other well-heeled types are flooding the city. Things get tangled when a German politician dies while with Aleksandra, and she lands on the police radar for questioning. That’s the tip of the iceberg. The protagonist of [The Slovenian Girl] is a picture perfect anti-heroine; Aleksandra is a manipulative, amoral liar, shamelessly leading a double life with the sole purpose of attaining as much material wealth as she can. Director Damjan Kozole never tells us why, leaving her motives open to interpretation and all the more universal for it. Aleksandra isn’t a likable or sympathetic woman, but she is recognizably modern.
