Program Note
“We need other people. We need to see beyond our own concerns, to communicate, ask questions, share our questions?for life offers no answers and love promises nothing. Hanna’s poems become Martin’s treasure: her images cry out for expression in music; for him, it seems there is no other way to tolerate life.” ? Andreas Struck A jazz trumpeter, Martin, stokes the fires of an existential crisis when, during one of his own concerts, he walks out and tosses his instrument into the river. Experiencing the same conundrum is Hanna, a mature poet that has abandoned her life for one that involves only what she carries in a small suitcase. Both are trying to find the meaning of life, perhaps humanity’s most enduring question, anywhere in the world. [Sleeping Songs] is a highly stylized exploration of self and purpose, with answers?and frequently more questions?found in the rambling, unfocused words heard on the soundtrack, which complements an ethereal, transcendent score by musician Nils Petter Molvaer.
