Program Note
When the needed becomes the needy, faith can take on transcendental meaning. Leila is a convict freshly released from prison after only 12 years of a life sentence for murder. With few options open to her, she takes a job as an assistant to a blind pastor, Father Jacob, whose greatest joy in life comes from answering letters from his parishioners seeking help. Leila thinks it’s a fruitless task. When the letters suddenly dry up, Jacob is bereft of purpose, and a role reversal leads to Leila’s own redemption. Klaus Haro’s two-hander is a study in repressed rage and lingering vulnerability that could have easily slipped into cliched melodrama without the director’s assured storytelling hand. Haro continues the heartbreaking explorations of connectedness that he began in [Elina] and [Mother of Mine] with his signature elegant visuals. The narrative’s simplicity makes its themes accessible, and Kaarina Hazard and Heikki Nousiainen’s performances exquisitely convey each character’s confusion when all they know and believe of themselves is shaken to the core.
