Program Note
Thirty years after the end of the Vietnam War, a Vietnamese doctor’s diary, which was kept safe in the U.S., is returned to her family in Vietnam. [Don’t Burn] follows how a diary written during the Vietnam War survived for thirty years and brings back memories of the pains and sufferings of the war.
In the heart of the Vietnam War, an American soldier, Fred, discovers a diary that belongs to Thuy, a medical officer for the People’s Liberation Army. The diary is animated with the life and death of a twenty-four-year-old woman who volunteered for her country, her political beliefs and romantic emotions, and her longing for love and her people. Fred goes against orders to burn anything that has nothing to do with the army, and keeps it safe. To him, Thuy’s diary is the source of strength that keeps him going through the brutal gunfire and a debt that he feels he must repay. [Don’t Burn] is a humanist film based on a true story that goes beyond ideological prejudices and draws out the pains and sufferings of war in various points of view.
