Program Note
There is a woman who has lived on the sea. At her age of seventy, but she still goes out to the sea alone as a fisherwoman. Not just fishing, while she maintains posts in a fishing farm, doing harvest, selling them in the market, and even doing land farming along, her drunken husband has no intention to help her work. Although being tired of a lifelong work, this foulmouthed woman still takes care of her husband and family. The director of the film is an independent producer and has been well experienced in the field, and he successfully captures the beautiful, sometimes sorrowful, seascape, which seems to reflect the weary life of the woman. While portraying a woman’s harsh life, in the course of the film, the audience comes to face not just her life but the life of modern women because the life of modern women is harsh enough to bear household burdens and responsibilities with taking care of her family and also need to maintain their careers in the workplace. Lee started making documentaries in 1989. He directed the Haeng (meaning “to go” in Korea) Series composed of Manhaeng (brutality)(1998), Donghaeng (to go with someone)(2001) and Mihaeng (to follow someone secretly)(2010). He directed 0.23 μSv – The Future of Fukushima (2013), a documentary approaching the nuclear disasters in Fukushima and Chernobyl from a new perspective. It will be released soon.
