Program Note
When her husband cheats on her, a woman cuts off her son’s penis. The boy becomes a laughingstock among his friends and his father researches ways to restore his genitals. When the boy is arrested with his friends for rape, father instructs his incarcerated son on how to achieve orgasm without genitals. Kim Ki-duk shakes up the relationship between father, mother and son to the point of complete confusion in Moebius. He adds to the mix genitals, orgasm, and physical pain, and shakes
those up too. The same actress at one point portrays the woman, Mother, and at another point a different character; depending on her relationship, sexual arousal appears or fades. The same is true of the paradox of arriving at pleasure through pain. When a knife penetrates the shoulders, it causes unbearable pain, but also sexual satisfaction. The film was completely prohibited twice in Korea, and more than two minutes had to be deleted before it could be screened. (NAM Dong-chul)
