Program Note
When a young boy turns up dead in a sleepy western Pennsylvania town, a local truck driver with Asperger′s Syndrome, Donald, takes it upon himself to play detective, embarking on an obsessive investigation in order to prove that the boy had been murdered. His investigation leads to unthinkable and harrowing consequences. Director Simon Fellows’ third feature film, Steel Country is a mystery thriller set in small town America. The pace of its story may seem a bit slow in the first half, but as story unfolds the plot becomes tense and keeps the audience on the edge of its seat to the end. Fellows’ meticulous and precise direction and well-thought-out script, and a superb performance from Andrew Scott makes Steel Country one of the must-see thrillers of the year, and an exemplar of what low-budget independent thrillers could and should be.
