Program Note
A young middle class couple, Zhenya and Boris, are in the process of getting divorced. Just like other divorcing people who want to put their broken marriages behind them as soon as possible, this couple want to clear away the remnants of their marriage life as soon as they can. As they have nothing but hatred left for each other, they don’t pay attention to their twelve year old son Alyosha at all. However, when he disappears after he sees them fight, they face another crisis. The latest film by Andrey Zvyagintsev, who has looked into the inhumanity of human society, Loveless portrays a world where there is no love. The loss of one’s child must be the cruelest pain a human being can suffer. But this pain reveals how the relationships that are conveniently defined as families, neighbors, parents and others and the feelings that accompany them can be hypocritical. The film reflects on the loss of humanity in modern society by exposing how the emotions of contemporary life are learned ideas after all. (Jin PARK)
