Program Note
In a remote village in Russia, a woman lives by herself. She sends parcels to her husband who is serving a prison sentence, but they keep coming back for a reason she does not know. She goes to the town where the prison is located in order to find out why, but is given no explanation whatsoever. Instead, she faces lies, hostility and violence in this town that looks like a small fortress. She is a gentle creature as the title indicates. She is not gentle by nature but is forced to be gentle by her surroundings. All the systematized places she sets foot in such as the post office, the train station and the interview room in prison are physical violence itself. Blurring the border between reality and fantasy, A Gentle Creature provides a strong audio-visual as well as psychological portrayal of an individual who is victimized by a violent system. (Jin PARK)
