Program Note
Jeannette is an eight-year-old girl growing up during the Hundred Years’ War. As she witnesses the injustices committed by English soldiers in France, she recognizes growing anger inside her and turns from a humble shepherd into Joan of Arc. For the past few years, Bruno Dumont’s works have been full of experiments and new challenges. He showed a completely different style from his previous films in his last movie, the comedy Slack Bay (2016), and surprised many people. This is the case for The Childhood of Joan of Arc too. This Joan of Arc, who saved her country in the middle ages and thus has been admired as a saint, sings and dances to rock music. As a young girl who hesitates before God’s call to fight in a war, she is different from the other Joans portrayed in films by Carl Dreyer, Robert Bresson and Luc Besson. A musical based on Charles Péguy’s play, the film shows beautiful music and brilliant lighting effects. It is the ninth feature by the world famous director at the peak of his fresh experimentation.
