Program Note
Marina is in her 20’s and works as a waitress during the day and as a club singer at night. One day, she enjoys a birthday night with her lover Orlando, a middle aged businessman, who becomes unconscious all of a sudden and dies the moment he is carried to a hospital. Marina has to deal with the sorrow of losing her lover suddenly, but the situation she faces doesn’t allow her to. The hospital doesn’t treat her as part of Orlando’s family and the family don’t accept her as one of its members either. The police even suspect that she might have killed Orlando. Being deprived of her right to love and mourn just because she is a transgender, Marina starts her fight to take her rights back. Fantastic Woman by Sebastián Lelio shows Marina’s battle in an honest and straightforward manner without the help of dramatic devices or twisted plot turns as Marina fights discrimination and prejudice with her bare hands. Her story of resistance to social prejudice raises an ethical question for us about how we should perceive the hard lives of others in our society and how we should respond to them. (Jin PARK)
