Program Note
Philippe Garrel’s eternal subject is youth and the suffering caused by the feeling of love. InThe Salt of Tears, shot like previous ones in black and white, he follows the journey of Luc, a young provincial, who came to Paris to write the entrance exam to enter a famous carpentry school. Living with his father, whom he admires, he hesitates to decide between two women. Pursuing the style and romanticism of the New Wave, Garrel paints the amorous portrait of women. Paris out of time is the subject of the filmmaker’s greatest films; however, this time the sentimental upbringing of a young man is again at stake. The Salt of Tears shows the moving and complicated relationship between a father and son, where one can see the affection that the filmmaker had for his father, the actor Maurice Garrel.
