Program Note
Based on true events that took place in China. Cheng Yong is a poor, divorced man of no consequence who owns an Indian herbal oil shop. His life is turned upside down when a man appears and grants him exclusive sales rights to “Grining”, a generic Indian medicine used for treating chronic myeloid leukemia. Among his patients, Yong becomes a “medicine God”. Follow Yong’s story as cops close in on him, Shou Yi becomes his best friend and business partner, as he meets poor farmer Peng Hao, and pole dancer Si Hui who will do anything to save her daughter. Set 16 year ago, the film moves between India and Shanghai, while still portraying cultural emblems of the Chinese masses. It’s the first Chinese film to move to Southeast Asian locations since Lost in Thailand. Unlike previous films, however, it is more than just a simple comedy - an overall dark and realistic tone encroaches on the comical situations. The subtitles emphasize that reality is different, but still strikes a pose to criticize the bleak medical infrastructure in China. (Lim Dae Geun)
