Program Note
Director Ahn Jaehuun has been creating animations based on Korean short stories at his studio, Pencil Meditation, since 2014. He uses animation in a way that lets imagination fill in the missing parts of a story. The Shaman Sorceress is no exception. Based on Kim Dong Lee’s novel about the magical shaman Mohwa, her son Wook-i who has returned home a Christian, and her daughter Nang-i who has lost her hearing due to fever. The conflict between Korean shamanism and Christianity is really a conflict between Korean traditions and western cultures. This conflict is exactly what brings about the downfall of a family in this tragic story with strong Korean colors. The beautiful images and the tragedy stand out all the more for the dynamic movements of the film. The project created much anticipation in the European animation market ever since its early stages. Sonya and Kim Dahyun, both musical stars, are the voices of Mohwa and Wook-i, and Jang Wonyeong adds charm to this film as the mysterious voice of Hwaja. (Huh Kyoung)
