Program Note
Anatolia, Turkey, 1915. During the Turkish police massacre of Armenians, a blacksmith, Nazaret, manages to survive but is separated from his family. A few years later, Nazaret hears that his two daughters are alive, and sets out on a journey to find them. Passing through the Mesopotamian desert, Havana and North Dakota, he faces both good and evil. The Cut, one of the most sensational films of this year, is the last story in the “Love, Death and Evil” trilogy by Turkish director Fatih Akin. While Head-On(2004) and The Edge of Heaven(2007) deal with love and death respectively, The Cut focuses on evil. This film, where a human faces evil by singing a song of good and hope, is very personal because of Akin’s exploration of his own conscience. In this epic film filled with compelling scenes, lead actor Tahar Rahim wanders around the desert and other desolate places, like in a western. This recent work by Akin, who has explored different aspects of humanity in the past, is coming to Busan after visiting Venice. (RHEE Soue-won)
