Program Note
Getulio Vargas is one of the most important figures in the 20th century history of Brazil. Following the military coup d’etat, he won the presidential election in 1934. On one hand, he was a hero who led Brazil into economic and social modernization. On the other hand, he was a dictator who rejected the path of democratization. Toward the end of his term, he designed a plot to take over the media and maintain his dictatorship but was pressured into committing suicide once the conspiracy was exposed. Getulio is an action-packed political thriller that reconstructs the last ten days of Getulio Vargas from various perspectives. Between Vargas and his opponents, the film remains unbiased and merely depicts the actions and choices that each party opted for during those fateful ten days. Action sequences and rhythmic editing invites the genre’s fans. In narrative development, the film does not lose its political and sociological composure showing ambivalent assessment of Vargas by the future generations. The making of the film was strictly based on historical research, using original artifacts as props and shooting at the actual spots of the depicted incidents. (Jin PARK)
