Program Note
This fourth feature by Mia Hansen-Løve is dedicated to the so-called French touch. Starting in the 1990s when electronic music was born and reaching into the 21st century, the film’s five chapters follow DJ Paul’s life journey and his emotional ups and downs. Set in Paris in the ’90s when the French touch of electro first emerged, the story vividly describes the great popularity of house music of that era. Famous tracks left by legendary artists, including Sueno Latino, Masters at Work and Frankie Knuckles, overlap with their personal stories, making the film even more meaningful. What is particularly unforgettable is Daft Punk’s “Within,” simply because the song expresses the inner instability faced by the main character. Mia Hansen-Løve successfully follows the subtle movements inside the characters in an artistic way. (RHEE Soue-won)
