Program Note
When England withdrew from India after World War II, India and Pakistan also separated according to their religious differences. This manmade dividing line also separated families and relatives living in adjacent neighborhoods, making one community Pakistani, and the other Indian. Beyond the discussion and debates on the problems between India and Pakistan, this documentary reveals an aspect that is rarely mentioned?that of the subalterns living on the border. The demarcation line between the two countries is located in the vast deserts of Rajasthan. There, 85-year-old Abdul reads the footprints crossing the desert through ancient wisdom. Some make the journey across over many days to meet their lovers on the other side. One elderly mother has waited 60 years to travel to the other country to see her child. The footprints on the desert tell us what the manmade dividing meant for those who have long lived in the region a way before the separation. (HONG Soin)
