Program Note
The life of the world-renowned documentary photographer Sebastiao Salgado is quiet yet dynamic, just like his own photographs. At the height of his career as an international economic analyst he chose to abandon his career in economics and switched to photography, thus opening a new chapter of his life. Through the breathtaking scenery and the sight of ordinary humans occupying them, all captured by Salgado’s camera, we experience unaffectedly some kind of truth about human beings. The Salt of the Earth initially began as two independent projects from Wim Wenders and Salgado’s son Juliano, but they joined forces to create this odyssey through the life and work of the legendary photojournalist in the course of socio-political history of 20th century’s Europe and South America. Salgado explains in his own voice the role of art in communicating with nature, humans and the rest of the world. (Jin PARK)
