Program Note
In the latter period of Joseon, the tyranny of noblemen and government officials becomes more severe than ever, resulting in the emergence of some Robin Hood-type figures. Some outlaws including “Chu-seol of the Jiri Mountain” become particularly famous for embarrassing corrupt officials. Lord Jo and his son Jo Yun are among the rich. Bitter about discrimination he experienced because he was born on the wrong side of the blanket, Yun vigorously tries to earn more money than his father ever had to get his parent’s recognition. Dolmuchi, a butcher, emerges as a figure to stand up against Yun, who is both a skilled loan shark and an outstanding martial artist. Losing his family due to the conspiracy of Yun, Dolmuchi joins a group of outlaws to take revenge for his family’s unfair demise. Director Yoon Jong-bin cooked KUNDO: Age of the Rampant in a Spaghetti Western style. In a number of aspects including photography, editing and music, this film recalls the works of Italian film directors Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci. It is also notable that this film creates a harmony of action and comedy. (NAM Dong-chul)
