Program Note
Ryu Hae-guk returns to his village to carry out his father’s funeral but is confronted with cautious gazes from the village people. With the village chief Yong-duk at the center of it all, the village people disrupt Ryu’s actions and soon having noticed this, Ryu traces Yong-duk’s past. Yong-duk’s mansion soars like a tower in the center of the village hinting at his power. Ryu’s father Ryu Mok-hyung may have been a spiritual leader of the village, while on the other hand Yong-duk was one of the secular life. The film [Moss] follows the rise and fall of the community by telling its diverse tale. One of them may be the violence of such birth of community and another could be the unredeemable greed of mankind. Director Kang Woo-suk dramatized the comic elements written by Yoon Tae-ho with the same title, while compressing features of Korean society into it. His past films may have been genre pieces meant for the masses, but then this film [Moss] foretells a different pace ahead; his expression of his deepened insight into society and mankind.
