This documentary, co-directed by Pascal Hofmann and Benny Jaberg, depicts the eventful life of Daniel Schmid, a great Swiss director who left behind remarkable legacy of films and operas. The stories in this documentary range from his early childhood at Hotel Belle Epoque, nestled on the Grison Alps in Switzerland, to the years he spent learning filmmaking in the politically turbulent Berlin of the 1960s, where he met German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Also portrayed in the film is the nightlife of 1970s Paris as well as film shoots in Morocco, Portugal and his hometown in the Alps. His perspectives on film and art, which straddle reality and fiction, are testified to through interviews with his friends, colleagues and his biographers. Daniel Schmid had a great interest in Asian culture and visited Tokyo and Shanghai and participated in PIFF before he passed away. (Jay JEON)
