Program Note
Italy around 1968, the year of the revolution. Nicola is a police officer who wants to be an actor. While in civilian attire, in the middle of students shouting for freedom of sex and against Vietnam, he meets Laura and falls in love. During the quelling riots in Milan, Rome and other cities, Nicola’s identity is revealed; Laura leaves him. The film speaks highly of great ambition and the dreams of adolescents all around the world, “revolution.” The results that revolution in 1968 brought on Italy is as touching as the passionate lives of the youths living in that era, and the film shows the beauty of editing by not falling into excessive emotion. Experienced direction of Michele Placido who is a well known Italian veteran director, and the performance by Riccardo Scamarcio, are worth noting.
