Program Note
This is a film portraying a couple’s short romance and subsequent farewell. It’s a work long dreamed of by Kobayashi Masahiro, who is said to represent Japanese independent cinema. A man who has left Japan and is wandering around the world, and a woman who has followed her lover to France, meet by coincidence at a red bridge in Lyon. As they learn about each other, they start to feel kinship toward each other. He’s a man who has left his old ailing mother behind, and she’s a woman chasing after her lover in Lyon without even telling her family. The kinship they feel toward each other slowly turns into love. But can a feeling that blossoms in just ten hours really be called true love and not just a sentiment of compassion or loneliness? The two are not confident about each other’s feelings. The decision to break up is the man’s lot, but it becomes a heavy burden for him as time goes on. Hence, her necklace and bouquet of flowers that he carries when he returns to the red bridge of Lyon is especially meaningful. (KIM Ji-Seok)
