Program Note
Working at a textile factory, Li Li is diagnosed with leukemia, but she and her husband can’t afford her treatment. Upon giving up, she decides to find her first love to feel happiness before she dies. [The Weaving Girl] deals with the terminal life of a woman, but it doesn’t force the audience to weep. Instead it follows an ordinary life and reveals the inevitable social limitation of facing death. Although this film intermittently implies that her life might be fulfilled with showing the sacrifice of her husband and her ex-lover who lives alone, it steadily follows the journey of Li Li without appealing to the emotions by leaving the hope and fantasy that she might have a happy moment. Throughout the journey to death, this film uncovers an aspect of society that we are meant to obey the conventions of society, and not individual desires. (CHO Young-jung)
