Program Note
The Bimo Records is an amazing movie in that it presents flowing pictures so that gets audiences confused with the genre, a documentary or a highly polished film drama. This movie is produced for four years to cover the minor tribe living in Sichuan, China. The four full years allow the director to capture the vivid atmosphere of the town, and even a breath of the people. In particular, display of pictorial feels and light-sensitive pictures is just a close fit to the needs for capturing the spiritual life of the tribe. The movie shows three religious leaders, the Bimo, and their respective destiny obviously presents the declining religious traditions of the tribe who adopts their lives to the secular world. They have to follow the governmental regulations to maintain religious prestige. The movie pays prudent attention to the aspects of traditional lives of the townspeople. Contrary to our expectation, their lives are calm even under the unbalanced authority and civilization of the modern world. Their society transmits the calm atmosphere to the audience where peaceful coexistence of this world and the next is possible. (Kim Young-jin)
