Program Note
Ljudmila & Anatolij is a film about love, sorrow and surviving in the shadow of disaster of Chernobyl. A mother and her son, and the everlasting struggle between memories and hopes. Gunnar Bergdahl returns to Kiev to follow up the life story of Ljudmila Ignatenko, five years after The Voice of Ljudmila. In the spring of 1986, Ljudmila was 23 years old, recently married bride. But her husband Vasilij never returned to their home on the night of disaster. It is also a story of a gone society and of the risks of nuclear power as we are following Ljudmila back to her old apartment in the forbidden zone confronting the reality of the effects of a nuclear catastrophy. In 1989 she gave birth to her son Anatolij who became her light in the shadow of sorrow and now is seeking his future in a rapidly changing Ukraine of today. Approaching the 20 years anniversary of the disaster, we meet with these two people who are striving towards the future carrying a heavy luggage of experiences.
