Program Note
Choro is Brazil′s own urban music. It is a blend of various forms-European, indigenous that has evolved over the course of 130 years. Popular until the 1920s, and the de facto mother of both samba and bossa nova, it faded into the background until a recent renaissance. The emerging generation of Brazilian musicians has rediscovered choro and it′s once again a musical form on the forefront of Brazilian music culture. Modern choro, with it unmistakeable sound, can be found weaving itself into chamber orchestras, jazz ensembles, and dance bands, and played solo or in groups. Tracking choro′s history and looking into its future, Mika Kaurismäki turns his camera on the music and the musicians, as opposed to a social view of music he utilized in his last music documentary, Moro No Brasil. Brasileirinho features performances by artists such as Trio Madeira Brasil, Paulo Moura, Yamandú, Marcos Suzano, Elza Soares, Teresa Cristina, Zezé Gonzaga and many more to colorfully illustrate this vibrant, infinitely flexible music with a prominent place in forging Brazil′s cultural identity.
