A young man smitten by a young girl at a neighborhood video parlor logs into a strange electronic game where player wins if he or she freezes a little match seller to death. It is further complicated by the fact that little match seller, who resembles the game room girl, must yearn for the game player who is trying to eliminate her. Competition was fierce for the young man who had no high tech equipment like his competitors to give him the upper hand. To make matters worse, complications occur when the little match seller acquires self-awareness. This film combines spectacular images with a general game plot. But in fact, it is actually the rejection of game logic that constitutes the basic idea of this film. The irony of preventing other competitors’ efforts to save the little match seller and eventually leaving her to die is by far logically impossible when winning her love is an additional imperative. It is even more difficult when the game characters’ self-identities are established as a prerequisite. These elements inspire the complex facade and the attraction of this film.
