Program Note
In 1993, the Taiwanese government opened its labor markets to foreign workers, leading to an influx of laborers from Southeast Asia. The narratives of the foreign workers tell us about the homesickness, hope and nostalgia that shape the lives of workers in an unfamiliar landscape.
Director
Hsu Hsiao-Ming
Hsu Hsiao-ming was born in Kaosiung. He resolved to become a filmmaker at the age of 20, after doing a summer job in a film studio. He worked with such directors as Lee Hsing, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, and eventually directed his first feature Dust of Angels in 1991. This film was invited to close the Quinzaine des Realisateurs at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. His second feature Heartbreak Island was also invited to Quinzaine, Cannes in 1994. After Heartbreak Island, Hsu finished one TV drama, the documentary Homesick Eyes.
