Program Note
Anthony, a happy husband and father, has a bad dream about his son’s brutal murder. His nightmare materializes one day when Anthony comes back after being checked by his father, a doctor who cares obsessively for his son’s health. Suddenly, Anthony’s body changes as his resentment grows and he finds out that his transformation is related to his father’s experiment. After dealing with the symbiotic fusion between humans and machines in [Tetsuo] and cyberspace elements in [Tetsuo II: Body Hammer], the third of Shinya Tsukamoto’s Tetsuo series deals with genetic manipulation as its newly added element, while the theme of machinization of the human body is intact. The Bullet Man is also using highly experimental visual technique but presents a clearer narrative than the previous ones. Obviously centered with the idea of “hybridity,“ Anthony’s mixed-blood identity and the use of English dialogues should be noteworthy. (CHO Young-jung)
