12 Debut Films, 12 Recommendations, In an Unconventional Way
I would like to introduce 12 significant Korean debut films of the year, without summarizing their plots.
SOHN Hyun-lok —
That Summer′s Lie (2023)
LEE Jong-su —
Heritage (2023)
You may feel discomfort by its enlightenment and gentleness when you hear “coming-of-age film”. After all, even in youth, there is love. And there’d be a complicated romance even in young love. That Summer′s Lie is a worldly yet poignant, naive melodrama.
Heritage cannot be fully understood through its narrative alone, yet it evokes emotions in a mysterious but undeniable way. Its minimalist style, with some repetitions, creates a unique atmosphere.
Eu-min KIM —
Isle of Snakes (2023)
If you're looking for a genre-bending journey that blurs the lines between historical drama and science fiction, Isle of Snakes might just be the perfect choice. It’s the tale of three men who became shipwrecked on a deserted island many years ago.
FAQ is a unique adventure that unfolds when seemingly unrelated threads intertwine, revealing the secrets of the world. Believe it or not, it’s real.
CHOI Seung-woo —
Last Summer (2022)
Is it possible for a film to be precarious and trembling at every moment, yet serene and robust as a whole? The Berefts achieves precisely such a delicate balance. The film maintains a composed and steadfast tone while keeping the audience emotionally engaged.
Last Summer embraces fate, destiny, and rites of passage. It’s a touching film created with a farmer’s hat on a poetic sensibility.
LEE Mirang —
Concerning My Daughter (2023)
The strength of The Guest speaks for itself. When a murder occurs, the film speeds forward relentlessly, like a car without brakes, creating a sense of madness. It's a horror film with an intense, frenetic pace.
Concerning My Daughter prompts reflection on interpersonal relationships and the meaning of coexistence. The film humbly asks that what attitudes are necessary for people from diverse backgrounds to live together.
OH Jung-min —
House of the Seasons (2023)
At first glance, the family spanning three generations in The House of the Seasons may appear trouble-free. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that the family faces challenges and struggles just like any other family. The film is notable for its expertly crafted storyline and well-developed characters, which are portrayed in a vivid manner.
Delivery is an ironic dark comedy about survival. What might be considered a blessing for some can turn out to be a disaster for others. It's a humble tale that explores the pursuit of happiness.
GUPASU Ryunhoi —
Sorigouldari: The Sound Underpass (2023)
Sorigouldari: The Sound Underpass is a nonsensical sci-fi story that suggests only artists have the power to save the planet. Despite the use of the word, “nonsensical”, it’s actually compliment to the film’s daring and playful nature. It’s a film that might pique your interest.
Work to Do is a story about an individual struggling between their obligations and their conscience. The protagonist's predicament feels so real that it's as if their dilemma extends beyond the screen. This makes the film all the more compelling.
I highly recommend all these films.
